About Wharton, Texas

Wharton is located along the Colorado River. It is 30 miles southwest of Sugar Land and 55 miles from downtown Houston. Located 45 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, the elevation is 101 feet.

Wharton has ten city parks and twelve tennis courts. Additionally, it  has one private golf course. Lake Texana is 35 miles from the city, and the Gulf of Mexico is 45 miles away. There is excellent goose and duck hunting available in the immediate area. The City of Houston is only an hour’s drive away. The metropolitan area provides professional sporting events, cultural activities, and other types of entertainment.

Wharton is a true regional center for Healthcare Services. For example,  OakBend Medical Center’s Wharton Hospital Campus is home to a signature No Wait Emergency Room.  As the last remaining independent, non-profit hospital in the Greater Houston Area, their mission is to provide exceptional, compassionate health care for our community, regardless of ability to pay. 

In addition to Wharton ISD which boasts many athletic and other extracurricular accomplishments, area properties can fall within range of Boling ISD. That said, private school options are also available along with several local childcare facilities.

Wharton County Junior College is a rapidly-growing institution serving Wharton and the surrounding counties. It offers a wide variety of Certificate and Degree Programs. WCJC has its main campus based in Wharton, TX with other campuses in Sugar Land, Bay City, and Richmond. WCJC recently opened its Fort Bend Technical Center in Richmond, TX to better serve the needs of the community and employers through an innovative workforce development partnership.
